郑愁予自述该诗源自童年的逃难经历, 他小学时, 抗战就全面爆发开始了, 父亲从陆军大学受训后一毕业就被送到湖北抗战前线, 调去襄阳张自忠的部队, 他则跟随着母亲经历过各种逃难, 一路上看到很多伤兵; 1948年12月, 他到江南的一个村落, 那里唤起了他童年时期逃难的记忆, 有关炮车, 有关战马的马蹄声, 他把这些冒出的经历艺术化, 写成了「错误」。
